Steps taken to lure young voters

There is an exciting episode that is about to begin in this political conflict. In order to draw the attention of the young voters in this democratic exercise, a novel initiative has been taken up. In preparation for the upcoming 2026 assembly polls in the state of Kerala, the Election Commission has undertaken a few unusual steps that are now drawing nationwide attention. While free Uber services are provided in certain locations, other places are offering the well-known halwa from Kozhikode as the sweet delicacy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Elections and the taste preferences of Kerala have come together for the Commission. Using the renowned Kozhikode halwa, new first-time voters shall now be greeted. As part of the sweet campaign for voters, a packet of sweets is being provided to approximately 4.25 lakh voters. It is more than a gift; rather, it is being referred to as a ‘sweet beginning’ in the democratic journey of a young citizen.

Transport is usually an issue on voting day. In order to solve this problem, the Election Commission has decided to partner with Uber. A free ride service has been arranged that will ensure the transport of young and disabled voters to polling booths. It is indeed a landmark move for connecting digitally-savvy young voters to the voting system. Among a total of 2.71 crore voters, 4.66 lakh are aged between 18-19 years. Under the guidance of Chief Electoral Officer Ratan U. Kelkar, a target turnout of more than 85 percent has been decided.                                                                                               In the meantime, the political observers feel that an increase in voting will suggest anti-incumbency sentiments or a desire for change. In light of that, both LDF and UDF have been making efforts to appeal to the youth. Similarly, the Bharatiya Janata Party is also making attempts to woo the youngsters with job opportunities and development. It should be noted here that the Election Commission campaign is not intended for any political party; rather, it is to make democracy strong.

Whether many youngsters turn out to vote on April 9 will become clear later on. But it is obvious that the taste of halwa and a ride in Uber would definitely pull the voters to cast their votes
