New disputes have arisen between the Naga and Kuki people in Manipur.

Yesterday, unidentified miscreants burnt down the abandoned Kuki village of Phaimol of Kamjong district.

Consequently, this assault resulted in causing unrest in the area.

According to reports, the arsonists tried to burn down all the houses except for the village church.

On the other hand, some other people tried to revenge by burning down Tangkhul Naga village of Shankhalok situated adjacent to Phaimol.

But security forces intervened timely and stopped any act of violence.

The first attack took place around 12:30 pm yesterday.

The arsonists went inside the Phaimol village which is situated at a distance of 45 kilometers from the Chassad Police Station on the India-Myanmar border.

Then the arsonists started burning the houses of the Kuki community.

Presently, the people of Phaimol village have taken shelter at IC village close to Assam Rifles camp.

In total, 15 houses were burnt down in Phaimol village.

Around 1:45 p.m., another set of people tried to set fire to Shankhalok Tangkhul village as a retaliatory action.

Fortunately, the police prevented the act from causing any significant damage.

Even then, the shelters of a number of Myanmar refugees were razed to the ground.

Also, there were instances of houses owned by the Tangkhul people being completely burnt.

There were seven Tangkhul houses that were partially destroyed by fire.

Moreover, seven to eight more houses remained unharmed.

Apart from that, there were seven houses that were charred to ashes in Huimine village.

Luckily, there were no injuries reported in both the cases.

On the other hand, police have filed cases in the respective police stations.

There have been investigations into these attacks as well.

Interestingly enough, these are the first incidents where Naga-Kuki tensions have escalated after May 13.

Before this date, clashes between the communities had resulted in the death of three church leaders and one Naga man.
