Rahul Attacks Modi Over Italy Gift Gesture
Melodi chocolate controversy
We’ve seen an interesting situation unfold in India, showing how something popular on social media can actually affect national politics. It all started with a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Italy and a box of chocolates, which then sparked a new political discussion. Rahul Gandhi, a leader from the Congress party, sharply criticized Prime Minister Modi, saying that what happened was “not leadership, but theatre.”
So, what exactly made Rahul Gandhi speak out like that?
Prime Minister Modi is currently visiting Italy. While he was there, he gave Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a packet of “Melody” chocolates, which are quite popular in India. People saw this as a playful nod to the viral social media hashtag #Melodi, a mix of Modi and Meloni, often used online when talking about the two leaders.
In a video that’s been all over social media, you can see Modi and Meloni smiling and having a light moment. Meloni posted the video, saying, “Thank you for the gift, Modi Ji.” After she shared it, the clip quickly became a huge topic of conversation online.
While a lot of people on social media found the humorous exchange enjoyable, opposition parties turned it into a political issue. Rahul Gandhi took aim at the Prime Minister in a social media post, writing, “An economic storm is hanging over the country, and our Prime Minister is distributing toffees in Italy.”
Showing his concern about the country’s situation, Rahul Gandhi mentioned that farmers, young people, women, workers, and small business owners are facing many problems. But, he claimed that the Prime Minister is busy making smiling “reels” while BJP leaders cheer him on. Rahul argued that this kind of behavior looks more like political theatre than what you’d expect from a responsible national leader.
After Rahul Gandhi’s comments, a heated argument started between the BJP and the Congress. BJP supporters are saying that the gesture was just a friendly diplomatic move meant to strengthen ties between the two countries, and that the opposition is just making it a political issue for no reason.
On the other hand, the Congress claims that these kinds of moments, designed for publicity, are just meant to distract people from urgent problems like unemployment and rising inflation.
It’s hard to say how far this political argument, all set off by a packet of “Melody” chocolates, will go. Will it just stay another popular topic on social media, or will it turn into a bigger discussion about India’s economic challenges and what the government should be focusing on?
