The Gauhati High Court has delivered a major setback to Pawan Khera by rejecting his interim bail application. As a result, the possibility of his arrest has significantly increased.
Khera had made serious claims against Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, saying that she had passports from the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda, as well as undisclosed foreign assets and investments in shell companies. This led to the controversy becoming a legal battle.
In response, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma went to the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station and filed a criminal complaint against Khera. She accused him of serious crimes like fraud, defamation, and tampering with electronic records. Following this, the police intensified their investigation.
Meanwhile, Khera’s earlier attempts to secure legal relief had already failed. On April 10, the Telangana High Court granted him temporary transit anticipatory bail. However, the Supreme Court of India later stayed that order after a plea from the Assam Police. Subsequently, the apex court advised him to approach the Gauhati High Court.
During the hearing, the High Court listened to arguments from both sides for nearly three hours on Tuesday. Afterward, it reserved its verdict and finally rejected his plea on Friday. At present, Khera must surrender before the court and apply for regular bail. Overall, this development has further intensified political tensions at the national level.
