Sand Truck Theft at Rajkanika Tehsil Raises Serious Questions on Administration

Two seized vehicles go missing within days; delay in FIR and lack of CCTV spark suspicion over tehsildar’s role

Administrative negligence, possible internal collusion, and security lapses in government offices leading to serious law-and-order concerns

Two trucks, heavily loaded with sand, vanished from the Rajkanika tehsil area. This disappearance has, understandably, sparked significant questions regarding the tehsildar’s involvement and accountability.
The tehsildar has been known to be absent from the office at various times, claiming fieldwork as the reason.
Moreover, the tehsil premises lack CCTV surveillance, which further deepens the concern.

Notably, it is a serious question arises, that how seized vehicles stolen tehsil premises?

According to reports, miscreants broke open the Rajkanika tehsil gate and stole seized vehicles twice within eight days. Earlier, on the 20th of last month, Rajkanika Tehsildar Bhanumati Majhi, along with mining department officials, seized two sand-laden trucks and one stone-laden vehicle after receiving information about illegal sand transportation from Jajpur via the Olavar road. During verification, officials found that the vehicles were operating without valid documents. Subsequently, they kept the seized vehicles inside the tehsil premises.

However, on the night of the 21st, miscreants cut the gate’s chain lock and stole one sand-laden truck. Later, on the night of the 29th, five miscreants again broke the lock and successfully took away another truck (No. OD 22AD 6399).

When asked, Tehsildar Bhanumati Majhi stated that officials had filed two FIRs at the Rajkanika police station. In contrast, police officer Sanjay Mallick clarified over the phone that the tehsil had filed only one FIR in the afternoon. Therefore, this contradiction has created further confusion.

Meanwhile, questions arise as to why the tehsildar did not seek police assistance immediately after the first theft, especially when the police station is just 200 meters away. Despite the presence of two night guards, miscreants managed to carry out the thefts, which raises serious doubts.

Furthermore, officials did not lodge any FIR after the theft on the 21st, and they filed the complaint for the 29th incident only on the 3rd, after a delay of several days. As a result, the delay has put the tehsildar under scrutiny.

Following the incident, the public has started questioning the safety of important documents, computers worth lakhs, and other valuable items in the tehsil office.

Now, several key questions emerge:

Is the tehsildar, despite being a magistrate, unaware of legal procedures or police functioning?

Why did officials fail to file an FIR on the night of the first theft?

Why did they delay lodging the complaint?

What action will authorities take against the two night guards?

Did anyone internally assist in the disappearance of the vehicles?

Who might be involved in this alleged nexus?

Finally, when reporters approached the tehsildar, she refused to give any statement on camera.

Therefore, the public has demanded that the district collector immediately intervene, conduct a proper investigation, and take strict action.
