Committee To Examine Gifts Offered To Doctors
Doctors expensive gifts
The Supreme Court is looking to take action against unethical marketing by pharmaceutical firms.
The case is about lavish gifts given to doctors.
It has been alleged that there were incentives to affect prescription decisions.
The case is related to prescriptions of costly drugs.
A bench of the Supreme Court heard the case.
Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta heard the case.
The court ordered the Centre to set up a committee of experts.
The committee will analyze any shortcomings in current regulation.
It will also study proposals by people and organizations.
It will make recommendations to avoid such cases in future.
The government will then place its recommendations before the court.
An affidavit about its implementation will also be filed by the government.
There will be three members of the panel.
It will study if the existing laws require tightening.
The panel might also look into a different legal framework.
In addition, the matter includes issues of gifts and foreign trips.
Benefits provided to the doctors will also be considered.
The Centre has referred to existing guidelines for the conduct of doctors.
These guidelines prohibit doctors from availing certain benefits.
This can result in doctors being punished.
But it must be noted that the Centre has recognized gaps in regulations.
The committee will try to fill up the gaps.
The Supreme Court will take up the matter again on January 29, 2027.
The Supreme Court had kept the issue reserved on September 8.
