US President keeps military options open amid nuclear tensions & diplomacy
US Iran tensions
US President Donald Trump has issued a new warning to Iran.
He was speaking about potential new military measures by Washington.
“Obviously we don’t really want to destroy it any more but we very well could,” he told reporters in the Oval Office.
Trump also claimed that Iran cannot progress with its nuclear programme until Washington agrees.
The warning comes amid heightened tension between Washington and Tehran.
Iran is thought to have sent a new offer on its nuclear programme via Qatar.
Tehran has stated that they will hold further peace talks provided they:
Can see their sanctions removed.
They can unfreeze Iranian assets.
Iran also wants compensation for war damage.
The conflict has lasted for 8 months.
This has impacted on oil prices and regional security.
There are still concerns over tension in the Strait of Hormuz.
With reports of tankers exploding there are concerns over maritime security.
The Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea has caused extra instability in the region.
The Iranians’ offer is being considered by Washington but with military threats on display there is uncertainty on whether there will be diplomatic progress.
