Nitish Kumar resigns from Bihar Legislative Council; Nitin Naveen quits Assembly

Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, has resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council. The BJP national president, Nitin Naveen, has also resigned from his membership of the Legislative Assembly.

Both Nitish Kumar and Nitin Naveen are all set to start their political careers in the Rajya Sabha. According to the Constitution, a person can be a part of both Houses for only 14 days. Nitish Kumar and Nitin Naveen were elected as members of the Rajya Sabha on March 16. So, as per the Constitution, they had to resign from either of the Houses by Monday, i.e., March 30.

Nitish Kumar’s entry into the Rajya Sabha assumes significance. With this, Nitish Kumar joins a small league of politicians who have the distinction of being a part of all four Houses of Parliament and State Legislatures—Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Legislative Assembly, and Legislative Council.

Prior to submitting his resignation, senior JD(U) leaders met with the Chief Minister. The meeting was attended by union minister Lalan Singh; working president Sanjay Kumar Jha; Vijay Kumar Chaudhary; and Ashok Chaudhary. Discussions on the strategy were held at the Chief Minister’s residence.
