Mamata challenges ECI order freezing TMC identity

Name-symbol row of TMC is now before the Supreme Court.
Election Commission had frozen the original TMC identity for some time.
The order relates to the name “All India Trinamool Congress”.
It also relates to the traditional “Flowers & Grass” symbol.
The order came due to a dispute within the party.
Both the rival factions were claiming the original party identity.
The ECI observed that none of the factions can use the identity.
This was in relation to the impending West Bengal bypolls.
Later on, the commission allotted different names and symbols.
One of the factions led by Mamata Banerjee got a new party name.
The party was given the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress”.
The party got the “Football Player” election symbol.
The rival faction got the name “Democratic Trinamool Congress”.
It got the election symbol “Envelope” for the bypolls.
She has disputed the interim arrangement made by the ECI.
Her faction has submitted a petition before the Supreme Court.
The petition is challenging the freezing of the original identity.
It is also contesting the procedure adopted by the commission.
Another petition pertains to disqualification claims filed against MLAs.
Her faction has pointed out the delay in the process.
The petition relates to disqualification claims filed against ten MLAs.
It also contests the recognition of the rival faction’s leader.
The Supreme Court is set to hear the case on September 21.
The matter continues to be connected with the forthcoming bypoll process.
The interim arrangement made by the ECI will continue during the bypolls.
Decision regarding the original identity still awaits.
