MLAs demand EPS resignation as internal conflict deepens over repeated losses

Will AIADMK Split Into Two Factions? Political unrest has intensified within the AIADMK following the party’s defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. According to sources, a group of MLAs and former ministers has demanded the resignation of party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami. However, sources also said that despite mounting pressure from various sections within the party, Palaniswami is unwilling to step down.
After repeatedly losing four straight elections, a number of top A.I.A.D.M.K. leaders are apparently not supporting Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s leadership. C.V. Shanmugam, along with a number of M.L.A.s, have called for changing the A.I.A.D.M.K. leadership after losing four elections.
The A.I.A.D.M.K. won 47 seats on April 23rd in the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and was an opposition party after the D.M.K. alliance won the elections in Tamil Nadu in 2021. After more than 10 years in government, the A.I.A.D.M.K. was only able to secure 75 total seats in the assembly. Furthermore, the last Lok Sabha elections, the A.I.A.D.M.K. only won one seat in Tamil Nadu.
The repeated electoral losses have reportedly demoralized A.I.A.D.M.K. workers in terms of their support for the current leadership’s political strategy and electoral performance, while also creating doubt about the ability of A.I.A.D.M.K. to maintain a single party structure.
The split between Shanmugam and Palaniswami may lead to the possibility of an A.I.A.D.M.K. split into several parties.
Reports also indicate that Shanmugam and his faction are considering a possible alliance with Vijay’s Janata Party (J.P.) and could lead to J.P. becoming a majority in the A.I.A.D.M.K. and increasing the uncertainty of its future.
Approximately 30 M.L.A.s are reported to be at a resort in Puducherry for discussing a possible coalition with other political parties.
C.V. Shanmugam is also reportedly at the same Puducherry resort meeting with the M.L.A.s.
Palaniswami asserts that the M.L.A.s at the Puducherry resort are there to show their support for the A.I.A.D.M.K.
There are also reports that the D.M.K. and other parties have been holding secret meetings starting recently.
