Authorities suspend pilgrimages to ensure devotees’ safety
Amarnath Yatra suspended
Pilgrimage to Amarnath and Vaishno Devi was hampered due to heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions. Hence, these pilgrimages were temporarily halted by authorities.
The halt in the pilgrimages was taken by the government after receiving weather warnings from the Indian Meteorological Department. Thus, in order to safeguard the pilgrims, the authorities took such measures.
Firstly, the annual pilgrimage to Amarnath Yatra was temporarily halted since July 19. Further, authorities warned that weather conditions may become more adverse in the coming days.
The halt was confirmed by Ramesh Kumar, Jammu Divisional Commissioner. Authorities have thus prohibited all traffic from Bhagwati Nagar to Baltal and Nunwan base camps.
The instructions have been given to those pilgrims who have camped at Baltal and Chandanwari base camps not to go ahead with their journey. Besides, authorities have put a halt to all movement on Katra and Trikuta route to Vaishno Devi pilgrim.
In the past, the pilgrimage in Amarnath Shrine this year received overwhelming attention from the devotees. So far, more than 370,000 pilgrims have visited the sacred place.
Last year, there were approximately 300,000 pilgrims. But in 2024, the pilgrimage surpassed the five-lakh number.
This year saw record breaking participation until bad weather affected the pilgrimage process. Thus, the authorities have ensured proper security measures in the region.
The authorities asked the pilgrims to remain in the government accommodations in Jammu, Udhampur, and Ramban. In addition, the authorities advised the future pilgrims to delay their trip.
Both pilgrimages would be resumed after improved weather and clearance of the routes by the authorities.
