Bengal & Tamil Nadu
Historic participation marks new democratic milestone in both states
West Bengal and Tamil Nadu just set new records for voter turnout, hitting their highest numbers since Independence. The Election Commission of India says West Bengal saw an impressive 91.78% turnout in the first phase of its Assembly elections. Tamil Nadu wasn’t far behind, pulling in 84.69%. Both states have never seen numbers like these.
If you look back, West Bengal’s average turnout during the 2021 Assembly elections was 84.72%, with voting stretched across eight phases. Now, it’s shot up nearly seven percentage points. Tamil Nadu’s turnout has also jumped—from 78.29% in 2021 to 84.69%. Clearly, voters showed up in a big way this time.
In West Bengal’s first phase, people cast their votes across 152 constituencies in 16 districts. People stood in line at polling places, and officials made sure everything went smoothly and safely. Everything ran without major hiccups.
The election isn’t over yet; several phases remain. West Bengal’s next round of voting is set for the 29th of this month. But so far, the numbers show people are more eager than ever to have a say in how their states are run.
