Naveen Patnaik seeks Rajya Sabha Chairman’s approval; Sasmit Patra’s resignation sparks speculation
BJD Parliamentary Leader
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has appointed Manas Ranjan Mangaraj as the new leader of its Parliamentary Party. The party has also selected Sulata Deo as the deputy leader and chief whip, strengthening its leadership in the Rajya Sabha.
BJD president Naveen Patnaik has written to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, seeking formal approval for these appointments. The decision comes shortly after MP Sasmit Patra resigned from the position, triggering political discussions within the party.
Several leaders, including newly elected MP Santrupt Misra, were in consideration for the role. However, the party leadership ultimately entrusted Mangaraj with leading BJD in the Rajya Sabha.
Sasmit Patra stepped down from the post on the 9th, but he has not disclosed the reason for his resignation. Reports indicate that four MPs had urged party chief Naveen Patnaik to replace him, leading to his exit.
Despite his resignation, Sasmit Patra remained an active and influential voice in the Rajya Sabha. He frequently participated in debates and even chaired proceedings in the absence of the Chairman.
In the recent general elections, BJD failed to secure any seats in the Lok Sabha. As a result, the party’s presence in Parliament is now limited to the Rajya Sabha.
