Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay is making a big push to cut down on how easy it is to get alcohol around the state. Just this Tuesday, he told officials to shut down 717 state-run liquor stores. These are all shops that are too close, within 500 meters, of places like temples, churches, mosques, schools, colleges, and bus stops. The government expects to get all this done in the next two weeks.

Officials looked at all 4,765 TASMAC stores in Tamil Nadu and found these specific ones weren’t following the rules about where they could be located. The official report says that 276 of these stores are too close to religious sites, 186 are near schools or colleges, and 255 are by bus stops.

Also, the government mentioned that this decision is keeping a promise made by the TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) during the recent Assembly elections. Vijay had previously told voters he’d make sure his government worked to create a safer society, free from addiction.

Naturally, this announcement has brought out a lot of reactions from politicians and the public alike. Those who support it are happy, calling it a vital move for people’s well-being and keeping young people safe. On the other hand, some critics wonder if simply closing these stores will actually cut down on how much alcohol people drink across the state.

Still, the Tamil Nadu government has stated clearly that they’ll keep cracking down on any liquor stores found in places considered sensitive public areas.
