India and Sweden to strengthen trade, innovation, AI, and green partnerships.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sweden on Sunday during the third phase of his five-nation tour. Notably, this marks his first visit to Sweden in eight years. During the visit, Modi will participate in discussions on India-Sweden trade, innovation, artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies in Gothenburg.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the visit is scheduled for May 17 and 18. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson invited Modi for the high-level bilateral engagement. Moreover, officials said the visit would help India review and strengthen its relationship with the European Union through Sweden.
Previously, Modi visited Sweden in 2018 for the first India-Nordic Summit. This time, both leaders are expected to hold detailed bilateral talks focusing on trade expansion, investment growth and strategic cooperation.
Furthermore, discussions will cover green transition, AI, startups, resilient supply chains, defence, space cooperation, climate action and people-to-people ties. Modi and Kristersson will also jointly address a Pan-European business forum alongside Ursula von der Leyen.
Meanwhile, economic cooperation remains a major focus of the visit. The proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement has added greater significance to the discussions as New Delhi aims to deepen economic engagement with Europe.
In addition, officials expect leaders to discuss the economic impact of the ongoing Iran-US tensions. Bilateral trade between India and Sweden reached 7.75 billion dollars in 2025, while Swedish foreign direct investment in India touched 2.825 billion dollars between 2000 and 2025. India also aims to strengthen ties with Sweden’s globally recognised innovation ecosystem.
