Prime Minister Modi says “Mother is crying under TMC rule” as second phase polling nears
TMC rule allegations
As West Bengal gears up for the second phase of polling on April 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday intensified his high-voltage campaign for the BJP. He addressed massive rallies in North 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts and, meanwhile, conducted a roadshow in Kolkata to rally voter support.
During his speeches, Modi directly targeted the ruling Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. At Bangaon, he led the BJP’s “Vijay Sankalp Rally” and, notably, visited Thakurnagar—considered a Matua stronghold—where he offered prayers at the Matua Thakur temple.
Furthermore, Modi accused TMC of betraying the people despite rising to power with the slogan “Ma, Mati, Manush.” He asserted that under TMC rule, “mothers are crying,” while party syndicates and infiltrators have taken control of the land. As a result, he claimed, people are being forced to migrate due to distress, adding that a “jungle raj” currently prevails in the state.
Meanwhile, at Arambagh in Hooghly, Modi linked the high voter turnout in the first phase to public anger against TMC. He emphasized that whenever oppression crosses limits, people rise like Goddess Durga.
In addition, Modi promised strict action against criminals if the BJP forms the government. He also assured that women would receive ₹36,000 annually in their bank accounts under a BJP regime.
Notably, the first phase of polling for 152 seats took place on April 23. Now, the state is preparing for the second phase, where voting for 142 seats will be held on Wednesday.
