Train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana
Hydrogen-powered train
The Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi, launched India’s first hydrogen-powered train.
The train will be functional on the track from Jind to Sonipat in Haryana.
The rail service would function along a 89-km railway line.
This falls under the Northern Railway region.
India for the first time will use hydrogen fuel cells in its railways.
Electricity will be produced by hydrogen fuel cells.
Along with that, hydrogen storage and refuelling facility have been included in the project.
Thus, India now joins the league of countries having hydrogen-powered trains.
Germany, Japan, China, and the United States are already using such a service.
As a result, India is the fifth country which has adopted this technology.
Prior to the official launch, Prime Minister Modi issued a message on X.
According to him, this would be a big step towards a clean railway technology.
Additionally, this pilot project would assess the functioning of hydrogen-powered trains.
At the same time, this would help India to implement its future vision of eco-friendly railway transportation.
Previously, Germany developed the world’s first hydrogen-powered train.
Alstom Coradia iLint became the pioneer of hydrogen rail technology.
