Congress Releases the Candidate Names for Karnataka Legislative Assembly Bye-Election 2026

All India Congress Committee (AICC) has announced the candidate names for the Bye-Election 2026 at the Karnataka Assembly. On 22nd March 2026, under the approval of the Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge and with the signature of the General Secretary of AICC, the candidates’ names for the Karnataka Assembly Election 2026 have been publicly announced. As per the information released, Shri Umesh Meti is selected from Bagalkot Constituency No. 24 and Shri Samarth Mallikarjun is selected for Davanagere South Constituency No. 107.

Due to the death of these two constituency MLAs, the bye-election occurred again on 9th April 2026. The two constituencies are named Bagalkot and Davanagere South.

Congress candidate Umesh Meti is an advocate by profession and has a good public political influence in the Bagalkot region. Also, his father, Late H.Y. Meti, was a former MLA, so it is taking a positive role for Umesh Meti in his winning.

Another candidate, Samarth Mallikarjun, has a great political family background. It is a strategy to retain the seat using family legacy support by Congress.

These seats are very important to win for Congress, as the seats were under Congress before the bye-election. So Congress has played a family sympathy card to get back both seats under AICC. Also, this election result may affect future state politics.
