Demonstrations Mark Victims of Chile’s Military Dictatorship

There have been protests for the victims of the military dictatorship by Augusto Pinochet in Chile.
Augusto Pinochet served as the ruler of Chile between 1973 and 1990.
Over 3,200 people lost their lives under the reign of Augusto Pinochet.
Others experienced torture, detention, and human rights abuse.
Protesters were remembering the victims of the regime in these protests.
284 people were arrested during the protests in the current year.
The figure is 80 percent higher than that of last year.
Fifteen foreign nationals and 31 children were amongst those arrested.
The authorities reported 198 violent acts during the protests.
None of the civilians was injured during these acts of violence.
The police used tear gas and water cannons because the protesters pelted stones.
Largest protest has occurred at General Cemetery of Santiago.
General Cemetery houses the tomb of the family of Salvador Allende.
Gabriel Boric, the ex-president, also participated in the demonstration.
Some other demonstrations took place outside the La Moneda Palace.
Allende was assassinated at that place in the 1973 military coup.
There were some demonstrations also at the National Stadium.
It used to act as a detention and torture center before.
Jose Antonio Kast, the president, remarked that history cannot be erased.
He became president in March after ending the regime of Pinochet.
