White House Talks

The White House situation room meeting regarding an accord involving the U.S. and Iran failed to come to a conclusion on whether the deal should be agreed to. The meeting lasted close to two hours. Notably, however, President Trump refused to sign off on the proposed accord.

As explained by White House officials, any accord that will be agreed to should meet the requirements set out by Trump. Trump said that he would go ahead and accept a deal that would be of benefit to him.

President Trump stressed one condition. That is, Iran should never manufacture nuclear weapons. President Trump further demanded that the straits of Hormuz should immediately reopen. It was also demanded that the rest of the mines in the water should be removed.

In earlier remarks, President Trump alluded to the fact that the meeting was one way of bringing about an accord. He was sure that the Iranian side would accept some conditions.

In the meantime, however, Iran argued that negotiations were still in progress. Iranian government representatives denied having reached any agreement. At the same time, they dismissed suggestions of holding direct nuclear negotiations with America.

Speaking at a news conference, foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei noted that Iran would not take decisions under any foreign coercion. He made it clear that Iran intended to safeguard its national interest and sovereignty.

It becomes apparent that disagreements persist and indicate significant discrepancies between the US and Iran. According to analysts, any further negotiations would revolve around Iran’s nuclear activities, security in the region, lifting sanctions, and stability at sea.
