The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) is trying to formalize its presence in politics. With much of its support originating from social media. The movement gaining traction after the employment-challenging youth engaged in plenty of online discussions around civic activism.
Sudhir Jakhar, a lawyer from Panipat in Haryana, submitting an application to the Election Commission of India . To formally register the party as an Indian Political Party and, in doing so, appointing himself as the party’s National Convener.
This application was filed in accordance with Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act. And should it be approved, the CJP would be the registered political party.
The Movement Seeks To Heighten The Level Of Youth Public Engagement
According to Jakhar, the movement signals more youth participation in the public space . And insisting many young people liked the idea of taking the movement out of the social media space.
It is reported that Abhijit Dipake, a student based in the United States and part of the original online movement, did not want to formalize a political movement in India. As a result, Jakhar decided to independently register the party.
Focus on Issues of Citizenship in Proposed Agenda
The application reportedly embodies principles of constitutional awareness, social responsibility, environmental protection, transparency, and public cleanliness.
Election laws will likely result in complications when requesting a cockroach party symbol. According to current ECI regulations, party symbols of animals are generally not allocated.
Social Media Trend Progresses
The movement gaining traction following provocatively worded statements about youth without jobs which led to comments backlash. Following this, a party was forming, emblazoning with the phrase “Cockroach Janata Party,” which went viral across many social media outlets.
Supporters believe the movement’s goal is digital activism, preaching the voice of the youth of India. And in essence, the hopes of the nation. On the contrary, some people do not believe that online popularity will translate to real world political power.
The application should be examining by the Election commission before a final decision is reached.
