An Italian scuba diving team of five members lost their lives while carrying out deep sea exploration in the vicinity of a submerged cave in the Vaavu Atoll region in the Maldives. These divers were reported missing since Thursday after they began their journey underwater to a depth of nearly 50 meters.

While one of the bodies was recovered successfully, bad weather has been causing delays in recovering the other four missing people. It is expected that search and rescue teams will undertake the operation on Saturday. As per the information released by Italy’s Foreign Ministry, four members of the group who were missing include Professor Monica Montefalcone, an environmental scientist from the University of Genoa, her daughter, and two researchers.

In the meantime, investigations are underway to determine the cause of this tragic event. As per local reports, adverse weather conditions and strong currents posed a challenge for the divers to come back safely. There are also suggestions that some divers might have experienced oxygen poisoning.

The group reportedly embarked upon the journey from a diving boat in the Vaavu Atoll which is around 100 kilometers away from the city of Male.
