Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei calls US bases “paper tigers” as diplomacy collapses
Iran US tensions
As tensions rapidly escalate in West Asia, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has adopted a strong and aggressive stance against the United States. He openly described American military bases in the Middle East as “paper tigers,” thereby triggering a major controversy. Moreover, he argued that bases unable to defend themselves cannot claim to protect the region, making such claims appear unrealistic. Through a post on X, he further intensified his criticism by targeting both the U.S. and its allies.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States have started to collapse. Notably, Iran sent a fresh peace proposal through Pakistan’s mediation; however, U.S. President Donald Trump firmly rejected it. As a result, the chances of restoring peace have become increasingly uncertain. In addition, Khamenei emphasized that external powers have failed to ensure stability in the region.
Furthermore, while addressing the occasion of Persian Gulf Day, Khamenei highlighted that the region represents not only a strategic waterway but also Iran’s cultural identity. He asserted that this globally significant route will soon become free from American influence. At the same time, he reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, he warned that Iran will respond strongly to any hostile actions. Ultimately, he declared that regional nations must control their own future and that Iran will no longer tolerate foreign interference.
