Union Minister Piyush Goyal confirms registration of GI application; decision process to advance in upcoming meeting

The famous sweet of Odisha, Chhena Poda, is moving closer to receiving the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal informed Puri MP Sambit Patra that authorities have registered the GI application for Chhena Poda under application number 1067.
The communication also confirms that authorities will consider the case during the Consultative Group meeting scheduled for May 28 and 29. They will carry out the process under the provisions of the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
Local artisans in the Nayagarh district of Odisha prepare Chhena Poda as one of the region’s most popular baked sweets. The GI tag will preserve its authenticity and protect its unique identity from imitation.
The recognition will also enhance the livelihoods of artisans and sweet makers who actively produce this traditional delicacy.
Meanwhile, Sambit Patra urged the Union Minister to expedite the process. In response, Piyush Goyal assured him that the government will take the necessary steps to move the application forward.
