Balen Shah has been sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal, becoming the youngest-ever and the 40th Prime Minister only at the age of just 35.
The former Mayor of Kathmandu and a popular rapper, Balen Shah rose to national prominence after the “Gen Z” movement in September. In the elections held earlier this month, his party secured a massive victory. In the March 5 election, the Rastriya Swatantra Party led by him won 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representatives, achieving nearly a two-thirds majority.
On Friday, President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath of office to Balen Shah as Prime Minister. The swearing-in ceremony began with traditional Hindu rituals, including the blowing of conch shells. On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami at 12:34 PM, Shah took oath amid chants by Hindu priests and Buddhist lamas.He is scheduled to enter his new office at 2:15 PM, also selected according to numerology.
Balen Shah was born on April 27, 1990, in Kathmandu. His family originally hails from the Terai region, a Hindu-majority area bordering India. By profession, he is a structural engineer, but he gained popularity as a rapper. Through his music, he often highlighted government shortcomings and connected with the public before entering politics and later becoming Mayor of Kathmandu.
