Munnar Hills Turn Blue as Rare Flowers Blossom Again
Neelakurinji bloom Munnar
Again, rare Neelakurinji blooms can be seen in the Munnar district of Kerala.
They can be found at the Korandakkadu hills of Mattupetty.
However, the rare blooming happens once every 12 years.
Hence, the hills become bluish in color.
Neelakurinji has significance from both ecology and culture perspectives.
Its scientific name is Strobilanthes kunthiana.
The flower belongs to the Western Ghats of India.
It typically grows from 1,300 to 2,400 meters above sea level.
In addition, the plant maintains the local mountain diversity.
Paliyan people also hold the flower dear to their hearts.
They count their age according to its flowering period.
Moreover, the flower blooms just once throughout the lifespan of the plant.
The plant then dies naturally after producing the seeds.
There are more than 40 species of Neelakurinji in India.
Strobilanthes kunthiana is still particularly important though.
The flowering process also aids the ecosystem of Nilgiri.
In addition, the Kurinjimala Sanctuary covers 32 square kilometres.
This sanctuary ensures protection of these flowers.
The flowers also help in conserving the Nilgiri tahr.
