His resignation sparks fresh political speculation in TN
DMK resignation
Ex-Tamil Nadu minister Thoppu N.D. Venkatachalam has left the DMK. He has also resigned from all the other party positions.
According to Venkatachalam, his experience of bitterness during the last assembly polls made him leave the party. However, he denied media reports of his retirement from politics.
He claimed that he had not made any decision regarding his future political career yet. Nevertheless, he is ready to contest again if people need his services.
At present, Venkatachalam also rules out any idea of joining some other political parties. However, the possibility remains for the future.
The reason for his resignation is connected with the approaching Perundurai Assembly bypolls. Thus, his departure has generated new political debates in Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, Venkatachalam used to contest the Perundurai constituency as a DMK candidate. Unfortunately, he lost the elections narrowly.
His supporters blamed the loss on his conflicts with ex-minister S. Muthusamy. Afterward, the DMK relieved him of the position of Erode Central district secretary.
The vacancy in the Perundurai constituency occurred due to the resignation of the MLA Jayakumar from AIADMK to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
However, Madras High Court has extended its interim stay on bypoll notification till September 8.
The stay includes five Tamil Nadu constituencies, namely, Perundurai, Tiruchirappalli East, Viralimalai, Ambasamudram and Karur.
