Court Questions Plea Seeking Restrictions on Chief Minister Vijay
Chief Minister Vijay
The Supreme Court made heavy criticism of the DMK in the hearing of Karur stampede case.
“Do you want the Supreme Court to direct the Chief Minister as to how he has to act?” the bench asked.
DMK was trying to get directions to prevent the CM Vijay and his Ministers from issuing public statements.
Further, DMK was seeking to become a respondent in the case.
But the Supreme Court did not appreciate this approach.
The Supreme Court pointed out that DMK seems to be using the forum for its political objectives.
The Supreme Court further expressed doubt about the need to regulate the speech of the CM or visits.
Supreme Court pointed out that the CM Vijay is not an accused in the case.
Further, Supreme Court asked why it is needed to restrict the speech of another person.
Moreover, the Supreme Court did not accept that meeting the victims would affect the witnesses.
The Bench urged the DMK to withdraw its petition.
Else, the court said it would dismiss the petition.
In light of the court observations, the DMK withdrew its petition.
The DMK was moved by the application by RS Bharathi.
Bharathi wanted the party to be made the respondent in the case relating to the stampede at Karur.
The petition wanted to put curbs on statements regarding the ongoing investigation by CBI.
In addition, the petition wanted to restrain Chief Minister Vijay and his ministers until the completion of the inquiry.
The petition also cited the government function organized on July 10.
It was meant to give money and welfare assistance to the families of the victims.
While the DMK did not want any opposition to such government relief,
the party said that the victims’ families were witness in the CBI probe.
As such, direct communication with political executives might have an impact on the investigation.
The petition also mentioned that Vijay announced ₹20 lakh compensation to the victims in October 2025.
It also suggested that future help should adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Supreme Court.
It further pointed out that the authorities should notify the CBI before making payments of compensation.
Karur stampede took place on September 27, 2025.
This stampede was caused during a public rally held by the leader of TVK Vijay.
This stampede resulted in deaths of 41 people.
In addition to deaths, 142 people were injured.
On October 13, 2025, the Supreme Court transferred the case to the CBI.
