Camera Trap Captures Rare Wild Cat in Eastern Himalayas
Eurasian lynx in Sikkim
The Eurasian lynx is sighted in Sikkim for the first time.
The rare sighting is confirmed by WWF-India and the Sikkim Forest Department.
The animal is spotted through a camera trap on So Lamo Plateau.
The camera trap has been placed at the height of 5,250 meters.
The area is situated in Mangan district of Sikkim.
While the picture was taken in January, the record was made public on Wednesday.
Thus, the discovery is the second sighting record of the Eurasian lynx in Eastern Himalayas.
Earlier, there was just one confirmed record of the species in the region.
Last year, the species was documented for the first time in Arunachal Pradesh.
This record was jointly published by WWF-India and the Arunachal Pradesh Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
However, in India, Western Himalayas is the main habitat of the Eurasian lynx.
The species is common in Ladakh.
It is found in Hemis National Park.
Further, the Eurasian lynx is present in Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.
It has also been reported from the Tso Kar Basin.
Moreover, the species is found in Nubra Valley.
Also, the lynx is reported from the Rangdum Valley of Kargil.
