N. Rangasamy took oath as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for the fifth time on Wednesday, strengthening his position as one of the Union Territory’s most experienced leaders. Lieutenant Governor K. Kailasanathan administered the oath at Lok Bhavan at 9:47 AM. Several senior leaders, including BJP national president Nitin Naveen, attended the ceremony. Earlier, Rangasamy and Nitin Naveen joined a roadshow from the airport to the venue.

Rangasamy, 76, started his political journey in 1990 from the Thattanchavady constituency. Although he lost his first election, he returned strongly the next year and secured victory. As a result, he entered the Puducherry Assembly in 1991 and gradually built a strong political base. Soon after, the government assigned him key departments such as Tourism, Education, Agriculture, Cooperation and Public Works. Consequently, he gained wide administrative experience.

In 2001, the Indian National Congress selected him as Chief Minister for the first time. Later, he retained power in 2006 after delivering an impressive electoral performance. During his tenure, he launched several welfare schemes and accelerated development projects across Puducherry. Therefore, many people still describe his first eight years in office as a golden period for the Union Territory.

However, internal conflicts within Congress forced him to resign in 2008. Afterwards, he formed the All India N.R. Congress in 2011 before the Assembly elections. Within just three months of forming the party, he returned to power and created a political record. In the latest election, Rangasamy won from both Thattanchavady and Mangalam constituencies, once again proving his strong public support.
