Southern States’ Representation Will Not Decrease After Delimitation: Amit Shah

Delimitation Bill 2026

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has rejected concerns in the Lok Sabha that southern states would lose representation in Parliament after the new delimitation process. He stated that their share will not decrease but instead increase.

Responding to various concerns and objections raised by opposition members during the discussion on the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2026 linked to the Women’s Reservation Act and the Delimitation Bill 2026, Shah clarified that all elections until the 2029 Lok Sabha polls will be conducted under the existing system.

He provided examples to support his claim: Delimitation Bill 2026

  • Karnataka currently has 28 Lok Sabha seats (5.15% of 543 seats), which will increase to 42 after delimitation.
  • Andhra Pradesh has 25 seats (4.6%), expected to rise to 38.
  • Telangana’s seats will increase from 17 to 26.

Shah also reassured the people of Tamil Nadu that their representation will not decrease. The state currently has 39 seats, which will rise to 59 after delimitation.

He further stated that the Delimitation Commission’s report will be implemented only after approval by Parliament and the President.
