BJP Faces Minority Representation Questions After Minister’s Exit
NDA government
An important political event has revived conversations in New Delhi. A prominent BJP politician, George Kurian, has quit from the Union Council of Ministers.
Earlier, Kurian held the position of Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Animal Husbandry. But now, his term at the Rajya Sabha has come to an end. BJP has not nominated Kurian for a second term.
Thus, Kurian has become ineligible to remain a member of parliament. Hence, Kurian has quit from the ministerial role, as per constitutional requirements.
Afterward, Droupadi Murmu, the president of India, has accepted his resignation following the advice of PM Narendra Modi.
On the other hand, political analysts have begun speculating about a probable ministerial change. It is pertinent to mention here that George Kurian was the sole Christian minister in the Modi 3.0 government.
In this connection, opposition parties have raised their voices more intensely against BJP.
George Kurian is a senior advocate of Kottayam in the state of Kerala. Furthermore, he has also been associated with the BJP party since its establishment in 1980.
He has held various positions over the years such as the Vice President of BJP, Party Spokesperson, National Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and Vice Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities.
In June 2024, he was appointed as a minister by the Modi government to the Union Cabinet. Soon after, he joined the Rajya Sabha from the state of Madhya Pradesh following a vacancy.
As of now, there are speculations regarding any change in the Union Cabinet in the coming period. As there are many important state elections scheduled for 2027, the BJP will probably reconsider its political strategy.
Moreover, there have been speculations regarding the appointment of Kurian to an organizational position in the state of Kerala. On the other hand, his appointment as governor cannot be ruled out.
Thus, Kurian’s resignation carries political significance. In the coming months, the truth behind his decision will become evident.
