India UN Reform

India has reiterated its demand for far-reaching reforms within the UN framework. In its address to the UNSC Arria-Formula meeting, India stressed the need for bringing about the necessary modernization and alignment of the international institutions with today’s situation. Additionally, India pointed out that many UN bodies were set up long ago and hence required an immediate evaluation.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Harish Parvathaneni, laid emphasis on the effective implementation of the UN Charter. He asserted that effective international peace and security could only be maintained with efficient, responsive, and adaptable institutions. Additionally, he asserted that the changing nature of the geopolitical scenario necessitated frequent evaluation of the existing structure.

India also stressed the need for maintaining dispute settlement through Chapter VI of the UN Charter. However, it pointed out that actions under Chapter VII should take into consideration the existing realities.

However, India reacted negatively to the comments by Pakistan about Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing that the state is an integral part of India. Moreover, India alleged that Pakistan was attempting to make use of the UN platform for its own political benefit.

On the whole, India’s involvement in the case highlighted the need for an improved, better-equipped and more representative United Nations.
