After the bill’s defeat in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation and apologized to women.
Firstly, he said women will not forgive the opposition for the “sin” they committed and will make them face consequences. On Friday, the Lok Sabha rejected the Women’s Reservation Bill. Subsequently, on Saturday, Modi addressed the nation and strongly criticized the opposition. He stated that the country witnessed how they halted the rise of women’s power. Although his government made several efforts, it could not pass the amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. Therefore, he apologized to mothers and sisters for this failure.
Furthermore, he added that when some leaders place party interests above national interest, they force the country and its women to suffer. As a result, the same situation occurred again. Millions of women across the country watched Parliament closely. Meanwhile, Modi expressed deep sadness when the House defeated a proposal meant for women’s welfare.
In addition, he accused parties like Congress, DMK, TMC, and SP of applauding at that moment. He said they celebrated while taking away women’s rights, calling it an insult to women’s dignity. Notably, he remarked that women may forget many things, but they never forget insult.
Moreover, he stated that the opposition underestimated women’s power. He said they failed to realize that women in the 21st century observe every development in the country and understand intentions and truth.
Finally, Modi warned that the opposition will face consequences for opposing women’s reservation. He clarified that the amendment did not aim to take anything away from anyone but aimed to give something to everyone. Importantly, he said this reform, pending for 40 years, would have secured women’s rights by the 2029 elections.
In conclusion, he accused Congress and its allies of spreading falsehoods to block the bill and mislead the country. He said they exposed their true face before women and added that they “killed” Parliament’s sincere effort.
